Hiroka Yamashita

b. 1991, Hyogo, Japan

After graduating from School of Visual Arts in New York in 2017, she received an MFA from Mason Gross School of the Arts in 2019. She currently lives and works in Okayama, Japan. Most of her paintings are inspired by her ‘satoyama’ life in Japan . She depicts the spiritual bonds between humans and their ancestral lands and nature’s generosity, rigor and freedom, imagining that these figures embody this spirit of nature in her work. By combining traditional Western and Japanese painting methods, Yamashita’s work experiments a spacial relationship between ourselves and landscapes. The unpredictable scenes start to have a story and recall the atmosphere as something that remains in our shared unconscious.
